ONE GLOBAL:
THE WORLD’S DEADLIEST ANIMAL
Advoc8, a mission driven agency, reached out to me to create a miniature, 30 second, horror movie as part of a larger campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of mosquito-borne illnesses. The timeline was tight, three weeks from start to finish, but we managed to develop a spooky, minimalist thriller with roots in classic horror design.
A TINY TERROR:
The team was looking at references from classic horror like “The Birds,” which inevitably led to Saul Bass, and the graphic shapes associated with Hitchcock title sequences.
They also wanted to focus on the ominous buzz of the mosquito, instead of relying on voiceover.
STYLEFRAMES:
My first step was to create styleframes. I explored very tight, anxiety inducing, close-ups of wings and eyes, as well as designing the full look of the mosquitoes as they shatter the glass of a window.
Ultimately we decided to shift from including some of the ONE Global brand colors, to designing everything in black and white - a further nod to classic horror.

PUTTING THINGS IN MOTION:
Once we’d landed on the style for the video, the next step was to create storyboards and an animatic.
The animatic sketched out the beats of the video, where a swarm of mosquitoes builds up on a window, eventually bursting through and coming inside.
EFFICIENCIES IN RIGGING:
To get the animation I wanted, I used a combination of rigged mosquitoes and un-rigged, single-use mosquitoes. Based on the animatic, I identified where rigging could save time, and where simpler animation would suffice.
It was a fun challenge to create a rig for an animal, especially one with so many joints.
ILLUSTRATIONS:
Below you’ll see a selection of the final illustrations for the video. They were drawn in Adobe Illustrator, then textured in Photoshop & After Effects.

THE RESULTS:
RAISED MONEY & AWARENESS ABOUT THE DANGERS OF MOSQUITO BORNE DISEASES
WE CREATED A MINIATURE HORROR MOVIE ON A TERRIFYING TIMELINE
WE DESIGNED NOVEL RIGS FOR A CREATURE WITH UNCONVENTIONAL LIMBS
